MINDRAF: Does Malaysia Need Another Sectarian Political Party?

By Farish A. Noor ~ April 25th, 2009. Filed under: TOM_Main.

As if the political landscape of Malaysia wasn’t overcrowded already, there has come into the fray yet another sectarian community-based party, Mindraf (Malaysian Indian Democratic Action Front). Ostensibly set up by ‘good samaritans’ concerned about the plight of their community, Mindraf has announced its political ambitions with the aim of representing Malaysian citizens of South Asian origin.

Now allow me to be blunt here: In the opinion of this writer, Malaysia does not need another communitarian party that caters to the primary concerns of a particular ethnic or religious community. We are already forced to work on a contested landscape where there are too many parties that are based on ethnic and religious loyalties, and yet another sectarian party will hardly bring us any closer to realising the notion of a Malaysia where identity is based on universal citizenship and equal rights.

If anything, the tendency of such sectarian parties is to further add to the process of divide and rule and to further entrench sedimented notions of ethnic-racial differences. This comes at a time when a younger generation of Malaysians have demonstrated their ability to transcend the ethnic divisions that once haunted the generation of their parents. So while we hope and pray for a better, more united and colour-blind Malaysia, whose idea was it to create another ethnic-based party?

The momentum for Mindraf was quite probably generated by the Hindraf movement that had managed to challenge the hegemony of the MIC over the Malaysian Indian community for decades. But even then, Hindraf’s appeal - as suggested by its name - was limited to Malaysians of the Hindu faith primarily. But some of us have maintained all along that the issues related to the Malaysian Indian community were issues that also affected Malaysians in general as well. The destruction of Hindu temples during the Badawi period was a loss for all Malaysians, and not Hindus only.

Over the past four years we have see how some parties have gone out of their way to accommodate the concerns and needs of others: PAS, for instance, has stood up for the rights of non-Muslims to build temples and churches and have defended the right for non-Muslims to practice their faith. It is clear that for some leaders of PAS like Nik Aziz, it is better for PAS to be allied to PKR, PSM and DAP rather than UMNO. So how much more accommodation does it take before the communitarians in our midst realise that we have to build a new non-racist Malaysia on the common platform of a universal citizenship?

The other worry is that Mindraf may yet drain support and members from the other parties of the Pakatan, notably PKR and DAP. At a time when we need to create an alternative mode of Malaysian politics that transcends the narrow, parochial and primordial sentiments of racial and religious solidarity, a party like Mindraf merely goes against the grain - and in fact confirms and further sediments the hegemony of divisive communitarian politics in Malaysia.

It is also during times like this that I feel that all our efforts (not mine alone) to promote a new de-racialised non-communitarian politics in Malaysia has achieved so little, despite the energy and time invested. Honestly, we are not going to have a new Malaysian politics unless and until we think, live and behave like Malaysian-minded Malaysians. And that day has yet to come, my friends. Sadly.

An ideology can be both tribalistic and universalistic. It depends how it interprets events. A so-called ‘de-racialised non-communitarian’ political party could also turn into one that is exclusivistic. When certain groups feel that no one can truly represent, what choice do they have? Just because they represent certain interests, they are labelled as sectarian. Isn’t this another form of hegemony? Even the very concept of Malaysian is sectarian looking from a higher perspective.

Only the oppressed has the energy and commitment to free themselves. Who can feel their pain and despair more? They just can’t wait and wait for the oppressors to free them. Other groups can debate and argue all the fine points of human liberation. What do we expect them to do at this very moment, living and dying without dignity?

Do you mean that our political and mental space is so narrow that we can’t afford to have another political representation? Why talk about democracy and liberty then?

The ‘unless and until’ sounds rather ego-centric.

I couldn’t agree with you more. Mindraf is the last thing malaysia in general, and the indians in particular, need. Another bunch of chest thumpers who’ll just run on the spot and do nothing good for anyone, including themselves - if we go by what’s happened with their predecessor.

This development is indeed, as you say, sad.

  3. Paul Lim

Do the people behind MINDRAF really care for the rakyat in Malaysia ? NO. They only care for themselves and aspire to duplicate Samy Vellu and his cronies in enriching their families. They should stop misleading people especially the Indians whom MINDRAF claims to champion.

It s time all people understand that the Indians get together and understand that since independence what have acheived .We have politcal parties representating the Indians namely the MIC who boasts that they have so much. The questions remain. What they have done for the community other than helping themselves and their family and friends. We definately dont need another political party for the indians.STOP CLAIMING yourselves as Indians but only as MALAYSIANS.We are one race ,one people so stop all the MIC,IPF and MINDRAF .

  6. Mahendran

Bro Farish, the few ppl got excited and start to publicize their political party dream. we all know its not gonna last even a few months, if not weeks.
We definitely do not need another political party that thinks along racial lines. im sure we are not lost in the effort to promote MALAYSIANISM, one-for-all kinda concept.

but the best thing is, im sure the govment will approve the registration of this party…they can show that 1) we still need race-based party, 2) another Indian bbased party, so it can break the community even worse…

  7. S. Menon

I never have had any time for race-based parties but that is a situation we had to live under, like it or no.

That said, there is sufficient evidence that the Indian community has been marginalised to the extent that many young Indians, from a poverty-stricken estate background, are now on the bottom-most rung of the economical ladder.

Given that the MIC, under the thumb of UMNO, has failed to look after its own community, that UMNO cares less that little of their fate, that the DAP does little for them, the only left for the Indians is the hope that PKR will pick up the gauntlet on their behalf.

This. however, PKR has signally failed to do. It is time they, especially Anwar, look into this as a matter of urgency so that the Indian community gets reassured that they will not fall into a no-man’s land of a bitter political struggle for power.

In the absence of any evidence that their plight is being looked into seriously, it is hardly surprising that the marginalised Indians feel desperate times call for desperate measures.

Don’t need another party guys, fight for hindraf thalaivan first.

  9. M.P.Nabhan

No! Definately not, but all PR members must bring out the problems of marginalised groups (immaterial of race, religion and colours). THey should look at this marginalised group as a whole rather than of gain in parties concern.

Look at the political scenario now, back stepping, hopping, pointing fingers at one another than looking at the economical situation now.

Most Malaysians are loosing the jobs now, PM is looking for reforms and gaining support for 13th GE, after creating havocs at Perak crisis. Dont you politicians sit together and solve the current isssues without interfering with ruling or opposition parties and solve the current turmoil!

Ruling looking how to help their race, religion, who is my support and oppositions are my enemies… Trying to make quick money, for my generation, so on so forth. The opposition pointing hands asking for neutral parties to judge, taking to court for justification, forming councills for every agencies.

Come on man whats all these! America have Senates from all parties and after they visualise everything as one and do not think that they have to be obedient servant of the party they represent…. They fight for the people and nation, not for the party they belong too. We are always being marginalised in all aspects, from governing, social oblications, freedom of speach, security and bla, bla, bla….

Think rationally and sit on your butts, and have a coalition government without any condition imposed and solve the needs of the people. Let the people judge whom to be the representative in the 13th GE……

  10. telur dua

UMNO/BN just love all this. The more divided you are the better. What next? Chindraf, Findraf, Kindraf etc, etc?

I’m sure they’ll get approval in double quick time.

  11. nath

I wish the government will not approve any more political parties.

I am not necessarily in support of Mindraf. But what irks me is the unwitting condescension of the so called liberals like you, Farish Noor.

You have little or no understanding of the real problems on the ground - what do you understand of the social ailments of the marginalized sections of the Indian community other than through statistics, if at all. Can you understand the daily sufferings, the utter feelings of hopelessness or the mind numbing burden of a decimated self image. A self image decimated by the very sectarianism that you speak about.

Yet you will pass judgements on those who seek a way out from all of this, the way they know best. Who else is listening, who else is doing anything at all about this. You tell me Farish Noor. You talk about accommodation. Accomodation is nothing but yet another symptom of sectarianism. You use that argument to decry sectarianism. What irony. See, even you do not recognize, how deeply sectarianism has affected you…

Calls for non sectarianism by you and liberals like you, sound so naive - but I must say it is so beautifully clothed. It makes me angry to think of such insensitivity. I think all of this is also a very subtle form of hegemony against the minorities in the country. It takes so many forms, this is just another form.

A sectarianism so deeply embedded in the psyche of our friends, that we cannot recognize friend from foe. Thank you.

trully indians do not need another raced based political party.

with one raced political party,…there will come another raced political party…and then another raced political party…and in the long run, as how we see today..each will champion their race and live divided.

most malaysian indians are of the hindu faith, but most do not understand the faith in depth, thus they blame the poor economic status due to so and so… If and if only they equip themselves with proper education and spiritual strength and global views of mankind living in harmony, will they be moving forward..may it be a small step or a big step.

every day we have indian thugs kiling each other, indians robbing and injuring all walks of malaysian etc…think …think…is this the failure of the government only or the failure of parents as well.

you’ll be surprised to see an 80 year old chinese man moving around a bicycle to collect recycle materials to earn some cash, and in contrast,…you’ll see a 30 year indian chap,…cutting the gates of a “house for sell”…building and earn a fast cash.

we need parties that can develop the strength of the mind of the people and not a party that can divide the people.

its actually time for this small minority group to go global, rather then being kept focused as indians in malaysia, They should learn to contribute more as a member of the GLOBAL COMMUNITY for the benefit of all mankind, and all things shall go well with positive thoughts.

If you fight for the rights to buy only REEBOK shoes then you only have the right to buy Reebok shoes and not any other shoe of diffrent brand name.

You see “INDIANS” is just a brand name label for a particular human being. If you fight for “INDIAN” rights you get to be treated as an INDIAN no more no less. If you believe you are a Human Being and fights to be treated with dignity accorded to a human being you will get the rights to be Human.

These people think they are INDIAN first before being Human.

Reminds me of the story of the Big wave and the small wave in the ocean.

Small wave said to big wave “Look you are Big and mighty with many layers of curls and I so small wave cant compare to you I am miserable”

Big wave said to small wave : ” Yes I am bigger and better than you, you wretch”.

Then a big voice said to them in a roar ” You fools, you are fighting over who is better but you are ignorant of your true selves. Your substance is the water the made you up and you are part of me the OCEAN, you exist because I exists and both of you are destined to dissappear as you hit the shore and retun to your original self, that is me THE OCEAN”

It would be more meaningful if we are to teach our child “you should not hurt anybody because it is wrong. If you do not want them to do the same to you, should you not do the same to others” It’s a basic lesson in humanity. So see another as yourself… a human being.

Statistics, statistics, statistics statistic. Are really the Indians in Malaysia worse off that HINDRAF make it out to be? Less than 10 % in term of population but 40 % of all Malaysian professionals [ doctors, lawyers, engineers ,accountants etc etc ] are Indians. In the top 5 richest Malaysians we have Ananda Krishnan.

So what is the fuss about? This is an ‘unequal’ world at best. There are hundred of thuosands of poorer Malays and Chinese, like that 80 year old mentioned earlier. They do not have Chindraff or Mandraff going into the streets causing mayhem. They ‘live and let live’. That is the very Malaysian thing to do !

  18. kavin

easy thing to do….just remove all the parties …make one human party…do all same rights….so no prob….no worries…all live as one human….will this happen?

  19. Gadfly

Statistics unfortunately have been stigmatised for its power to tell lies. In fact, it depends on who are using it. For example, in an island where there are 100 inhabitants with 100 cows. The leader could declare that every person has one cow when in fact he owns all the 100 cows. If you average out the wealth of Ananda Krishnan’s wealth with all the Indians, I believe they all must be quite comfortable in life. He is not known for his contributions to his Indian community. More importantly, it reflects the colossal gap between the super-rich and the underclass. Do we really want an egalitarian society? Does it make human sense if we believe humans are born equal?

  20. anna brella

I think reasonable people would agree that desperate times needed extra-smart measures as desperate measures in desperate times will…er…most likely doom one to that dead meat territory just that much faster.

So I think Malaysia needs another racist party like I need a hole in my head.

And for that matter, Malaysian Indians probably need those imbecilic MIC juvenile upstarts and their moronic thinking - such as the particularly asinine thought-construct for a special voodoo department for Indians to be set up - like I bet they need SARS or AIDS or the Sedition Act lockjaw or even a state-sponsored visit to the ISA-sledgehmmer-Club in Hotel KDC.

“We are very serious about this. We want to propose to the government on the setting up of such a department. It can be called the Hindu Affairs Department,” MIC Youth wing advisor S Vell Paari told Malaysiakini today.

“The department can be the place where a converting spouse must go to get prior approval so that the non-converting spouse is not taken by surprise with the conversion.

“The department can ensure that the conversion does not have any impact on the children and maybe can even protect the children from being converted without the knowledge of the non-converting spouse.

“At the moment, without any guiding agency, the controversies surrounding the conversions are getting messier,” he said.

He also added that the department can also look into the issues of temple demolitions or the construction or relocation of temples.

Likewise, he said, the problems of visa for temple priests, musicians and sculptors too could be undertaken by the department so that the government’s decision on the matter can be implemented properly without the interference of little Napoleons.

“There is nothing for the government to lose by setting up this department. In fact it will only be regaining the support of the Indian community,” he added.

Yeah, you’re so right there Vell Paari and gang…….in fact, you’re so right that I think I feel the need to go and throw up now.

To follow on from the above potentially vomit-inducing polemic (provided of course that either the good intellectual Farish Noor or the like-minded supportive team-mate moderator Yossarian is kind enough to allow me this open-minded, stealth-based infiltration here) this further offering comes with a large measure of the appropriate caveats.

First, I feel so much better now after responding to that desperate need I had for that desperate measure of a throw-up brought upon me by the desperately imbecilic thinking inherent in the thought-cespool webs within the MIC Brain.

And like all things in Life and the Universe, the ideal we call Equality needs to be understood before we start pretending that we….er…understand what it is.

Here are some basic guidelines on what humans mean by EQUALITY. You may of course have your own useful/useless views to add to mine which is then good for learning more about this good principled concept we all want called EQUALITY.

    1. All human beings are EQUAL in the eyes, heart and mind of a just, loving GOD.
This belief is based primarily on faith obviously, but strangely enough, it is also based on experiential knowledge that is supported by the quest for an unvarnished/uncompromised Truth/truth that one finds intrinsic only within the broadly related methodologies used for the purpose (of truth-seeking) by the fields of philosophy and science.

    2. All human beings are EQUAL in the eyes of human-made good Law to manifest the principle of Justice. This is why the good civilised society constructs a fair and just Legal System and puts it under the care of fair and independent/impartial administrators - decision-makers called Judges and mediating and conciliatory arbitrators called Lawyers. That is why I think, traditionally in proceedings within a Court of Law, we address Judges as Your Honour (being an honourable person who can be trusted implicitly to decide fairly in the interest of Justice) and Lawyers as “learned counsel” (being principled people who have learned and UNDERSTOOD the building block principles lying behind Laws which they counsel and arbitrate upon).

    3. All human beings are, however, NOT EQUAL in their natural and developed intelligences and in their aptitudes/abilities for various sorts of human learnings and in the performance of various sorts of tasks. Taking a very simplistic view from Nature, you can see that ducks are born swimmers, squirrels and monkeys natural-born climbers and birds unrivalled natural flyers in the air while horses are born as animals of flight on land, but again differentiated into those equines who are speedy thoroughbreds and those that are stamina-laden for long-distance flight on land.

    4. Similarly, we humans too are not all natural ducks or squirrels, monkeys, birds or even horses.

    5. However, all humans are EQUAL when it comes to their human and societal right of access to Equal Opportunities. Humans are endowed with various sorts of natural talents and the ability to hone those raw talents further AND also can develop new skills and expertise when required using their natural/God-given adaptational/survival skills which is underpinned by an unrivalled, natural learning ability (which kicks in naturally when given the right opportunities) over all other currently known species existing on this planet or indeed in the wider known Universe.

    6. That self-fuelled and propelled human learning and development depends on each individual’s personal strengths and abilities and importantly, ALSO the opportunities open and the required support accorded to each individual by their societies (and strategically led in that direction by their elected Governments) to enable that growth of that individual in whichever field they can excel at, and thereby also boosting the overall growth and survival of that whole society and nation.

    7. Nothing in any of the above is constrained or limited by a human individual’s artificially-constructed administrative classification boxes such as passports and IC numbers, race, ethnicity, religion, culture nationality or even, shockingly for some, GENDER. Men and women have been proven by experience of logic, reason and also science to have the same brain size and equal opportunity to expand on that original potential to develop their individual volumes of grey and white matter through equal mental abilities and learning capacities, with the only real difference between the two genders being a real difference based on their base physical strength which is a natural consequence from the design modification in their biological blueprints to engender a core difference in their anatomical structures to facilitate certain biological functional specialisations. And in fact all good spiritual God-centred religions of the human world recognise this fundamental unity and also diversity in the human race, and so are based on the Ideal of God and which holy, spiritual teachings are in perfect alignment to sync into harmony with the model of good societal governance based on the human social ideal we know as Democracy.

Er……end of this totally gratuitous, weekend-freetime loaded lengthy thesis/ramblings on Equality and the mysterious universal number of 42. And please don’t all the politickers from racist, segregated political parties like MIC and its juveniles or MCA/UMNO/Mindraf/BNP/KKK, etc.etc., or those who may choose to segregate and classify and divide humans on a religiously traditional basis - such as Hindus (Shiva-ites, Vishnu-ites, Brahma-ites, Kali-ites, etc. etc)/Buddhists (Zen or otherwise) /Christians (Orthodox, non-Orthodox, Roman Catholics, other Catholics, Protestants, Anglicans, etc.etc.) /Muslims (Shiites, Sunni, Hadhari,Wahaabi, Ahmadiyyah, etc. etc.)/Zorosatrians/Jews (Orthodox and non-Orthodox) (Bahai/Scientologists/ etc.etc. – bring out your material/immaterial or even metaphysically sharp and pointy or pointedly deadly objects to attack me all at once, or else I might feel the desperate need coming on to opt for another one of my…..er….desperate measures from here……smile.

(I’m … not sure how this is relevant to the actual article but I reckon, just this once, can la … – yusseri)

This is something I would like to share with all friends. When I first went into Lim Kit Siang’s blog (blog.limkitsiang.com), the first thing I read is him calling Mukhriz (Jerlun MP) and Tan Keng Liang (gerakan kedah youth chief) as people “lack of grey matters” and silly. That was about 2 weeks ago. Today, I read that he said “the IQ of the Health Minister, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, who is MCA Vice President and Penang MCA State chief, is highly suspect when he could not understand simple English”. The problem is that the more Lim Kit Siang branding that he is smarter than the rest of the people in the world (which I don’t belief), the more people will just see him as a person barking on the wrong tree. I support DAP but I wish that our party’s chairman can be more polite when addressing other leaders (whether they are Barisan or Pakatan). Otherwise, this will set bad example to the new generation of Malaysians.

Anna brella, your question is a truly challenging one that one may die even without knowing the answer. If our purpose in life is happiness, this question is a nuisance. So, never mind if there is no answer.

But, my response is this: conceptual questions can only be answered conceptually. However, there are 2 approaches to your question - conceptual and non-conceptual.

You have named many a category of politics and religion. May I ask, how do you categorise yourself? (You don’t have to answer here.)

Any category that we have can lead to biasness and prejudices. If we think that this is not possible, think again whether we are being unaware of it. (Google minimal group theory or Taifel for info on the origins of prejudice)

Since you mention Buddhism, I would like to say a word or two. Buddhism is more of a psychology of the mind rather than a religion as wrongly constructed by the Europeans. Buddhism is a ‘religion’ that deconstructs itself, including the concept of deconstruction. Categorisation and conceptualisation lead to greed, fear and delusion., which further reinforces the cycle in a closed loop. This is undone at the cognitive and non-conceptual level. As a religion in practice, Buddhism has a relatively good record in non-violence, whereas it has not much to offer in social political theories.

Labels do not tell us much. In fact, we can find entirely contradictory concepts within the same label and yet we still continue to use the same label. It is better to clarify language and take a linguistic turn first before ending up in a profusion of confusing ideas.

Gotta love how everyone is an expert. Sitting in their comfortable homes, writing comments, being an activist for 5 minutes. “We fight for all Malaysians!”, so say we all, and in the same breath, “Oooh Heroes is playing on TV now”.

Don’t get me wrong though, firstly, I agree with Farish, we really don’t need another new joker in town representing the brown people. Personally, I doubt anything would come out of it. Secondly, I seriously doubt it would have any negative impact. Ethnic Indians are so fragmented, vast numbers are not even educated, illiteracy still exist in their numbers. We’ve been stereotyped with all the negative elements ever attributed to Man, that anything that is perceived another negative element, really does not matter.

“All humans are born equal”, goddammit, we are all born equal, apparently one needs to just say it, and that’s enough. Idealism aside, the realistic attitude of man towards another man because of his creed and color, subconsciously or consciously is much different, even from the commentators here, whether they choose to admit it, or not :)

When one, right from schooling is called a ‘Keling’ and comes to realize its associated with negative elements, when one is forced to always reply to the question, “Bangsa?”, “India”, when one walks to the store to buy a packet of smokes in the middle of the night, and scores of people cross the street to avoid him, not by virtue of knowing him of his [mis]deeds, but because he’s a shade closer to the color of night, when much is written publicly of such evil and disgusting elements of one, even though one has never been inclined to evil or acted with any element that causes disgust, one wonders how pleasant it must be sitting on the other side, staring at the monitor, reading some piece, and shaking their heads, and going, “these indians ahhhhhh”.

You want to do something about these brown people, come among them and do it, treat them as equals, and show them the light since apparently, paternalistic racism is accepted. Course, I honestly doubt any here would ever step into a classroom full of those midget brown people and start educating them, inconvenience trumps all.

So some brown jokers got together, and decided that in actual fact, the world isn’t color blind, joker A and joker B has claimed it over the years its color blind, but for some odd reason these jokers can distinguish colors so vividly to the extent of determining the shades of brown perfectly, they’ve even set their graphic adapters to distinguish the 32bit color spectrum, they bloody want to see 16 million colors. No, armchair critics are all words of convenience, like the fragmented packets of the medium they use, they come and voice their opinions, and with the same traits of the fragmented packets, they vanish, consciously patting themselves, “I have saved the brown people from their stupidity of trying to make their lives better, yes, some of them should only enjoy one meal a day until our idealism becomes reality”.

At the end of the day, it matters not of the hundreds of opinions posted here and everywhere else, it’s a crime for a child to starve in my books, and some do agree with me on that fact, so they decide to up and do something about it, whether it gets mixed up in racial politics and gets shoved into the gutter at the end of the day, maybe, just maybe, one kid got a good meal for some time, and yeah, he was probably a brown midget. What’s sad is the cries that a brown midget got a decent meal for one time, and with all the shouts of, “All humans are created equal”, nobody ponders that the brown midget deserved his meal, didn’t matter whether he was brown and an organization was doing it only for the shades of the night. And that is what most comments here are, indirectly pooh pooh-ing a sad fact that, maybe its just a bunch of people that got tired of being shafted by idealism and what not, the reality is just so different.

I admit, one may freely use any other color of their choice, and it is most probable that similarities exist. Its not the fact that the idealism of the three musketeers, “one for all and all for one” is bad, I’m just saying, its *never* practiced by the very people that call for it. Oh, it is so easy to sit in our cozy chair and comment, I think I’m starting to like it myself, its barely any work, and I’ll pat myself later on, I have had my say! Then vehemently deny that action speaks louder than words to justify my weakness.

Until we are prepared to enforce and contribute to one Malaysia, not only by words, but by work, there is seriously no point bashing those that want to serve their own community.

Screw all the facade of concern and intellectuality, reality doesn’t give a damn.
