Term break essay question for students of: AS6011 State, Society and Politics in Malaysia (Week 5)

By Farish A. Noor ~ December 10th, 2009. Filed under: Lecture Notes.

Taking into consideration the themes and subjects we have discussed thus far that include:

  1. That national identities are discursively constructed and nations are likewise composite assemblies;
  2. And that historical progression is never linear or essentially determinate;
  3. And that identities are negotiated, historically contingent and context-bound;
  4. And that all claims to essentialised identities are political in nature and ideological in their claims and instrumentalisation,

THEN, address the following question:

WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND OF THE CONCEPT ‘MALAYSIAN FRIED KWAY TEOW’?

Word limit: Minimum 1,500 words, maximum 2,500 words.

You may cite any reference you like. Appendices and footnotes/endnotes count as part of the text and will be included in the final word count. Essays to be handed over first week of the second part of the trimester, by 6 January 2010. (Any extensions to be negotiated personally with me and upon my approval.)

You have three weeks to impress me, and if I don’t see you before the last day of term, then have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
